Thanks to intrepid explorer of the biological kind - interdisciplinary artist and educator Heather Barnett – yesterday, a gathering of curious creatives from about the world were able to enjoy the artistic possibilities of slime-mould.
Part of the Floating Cinema’s Extra-Terrestrial London series, which runs from August 21st to September 20th, the workshop kicked off with a fascinating talk by Heather, followed by a hands-on session in which all aboard created an assemblage of artistic experiments. Upcoming events in the Floating Cinema series include a talk by Dr. Marc Sarzi and Dr. Lewis Dartnell exploring the symbiotic relationship between fiction and fact through expanding technological capabilities, and four-day open air film programme featuring cult classics and rarities, alongside talks and art installations 'exploring visions of cosmic utopias and future intergalactic worlds'. Wonderful to see Britain’s town and city councils embracing flower power and planting urban meadows in abundance. Enjoy this one, which can be found at Montpellier Gardens in Cheltenham.
Delighted to hear the ever-dynamic Living PlanIT have won the Frost & Sullivan Global Visionary Innovation Leadership Award 2015. A much deserved win for Steve Lewis and his super-talented team. Like the Logplug, Living PlanIT brings a 'high degree of support without detracting from the natural beauty'!
VIIth International Bioengineering Congress will be held at the Izmir Architecture Center, Turkey, between 19 – 21 November, 2015. The event will bring together the national and international researchers and entrepreneurs at the leading-edge of bioengineering to share their experiences, expose existing potential, reveal the latest developments in the field, and initiate commercially viable projects between companies and researchers. The over-arching theme of their discussions will centre on “solutions of nature for societal challenges’. Many and varied fields of bioengineering will be explored, including Biosensors, Biosimilars, Smart Materials, Microfluidics, Biomechanics and Prosthetics, DNA Origami, Theranostics, Regenerative Medicine, Assistive Technologies, Biorefinery, Bioproduction, Biotechnology, Environmental Biodesign, Bioarchitecture, Biocouture, Bioart, Entrepreneurship for Biodesign and IP in Biodesign Research, Development and Commerce. A member of the Bioengineering Congress Scientific Committee, I will be delivering a plenary speech titled “Building Brighter Futures with Biomimetics”, discussing how biodesign can help us to meet the built environment challenges of the 21st Century. Find out more, including abstract submission details at http://bec2015.org
Bionic City blog is born! Thank you for popping by! This is the spot where you'll find regular updates on the people, projects and places on the Bionic City radar. More to come soon, but in the meantime, enjoy this fabulous poem from Archigram's David Greene.
